Finding Your Glimmers

In our fast-paced, diet-focused world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when it comes to eating. We second-guess food choices, wonder if we’re eating too much or not enough, and carry the weight of decades of diet culture whispering in the background. It’s exhausting. But what if we could flip the script? What if we could notice the small, quiet moments that feel good—those little sparks that make us pause, breathe, and smile?

These moments are called glimmers.

What Are Glimmers?

Glimmers are the subtle, fleeting experiences that remind us we’re okay. They’re those tiny bursts of safety, joy, or calm that can help shift us out of stress and into ease.

For me, one of my favorite glimmers happens every morning with my first sip of tea. It’s a moment that feels steady, no matter what the day ahead might hold. That first sip isn’t just about the tea—it’s about the pause, the connection to something familiar and soothing. It’s a small reminder that even in the busiest or most chaotic moments, there’s space to slow down and savor something just for me.

Another glimmer for me is baking for the people I love. There’s something about the aroma filling the kitchen, the care I pour into every step, and the joy on their faces as they savor what I’ve created. It’s more than just baking—it’s a way to connect and share love in the simplest, most heartfelt way.

This is what glimmers are all about: noticing those little things that anchor you in the moment and remind you that not everything has to feel hard.

Glimmers in Eating

Intuitive Eating is about learning to trust your body again—listening to hunger and fullness cues, letting go of guilt, and making peace with food. But this process can feel messy. That’s where glimmers come in. They help you notice what’s going right, even if it’s just for a moment.

Some Glimmers You Might Find Around Food:

  • That first bite of a warm, fresh-baked cookie.

  • Feeling hunger turn into fullness in a way that feels satisfying, not overwhelming.

  • Eating dessert and realizing that you’re not thinking about calories, just how good it tastes.

  • The laughter and connection that comes with sharing a meal with friends.

  • The nostalgic smell of a dish that reminds you of childhood.

How to Find Your Glimmers

Glimmers don’t have to be grand. They’re already there, waiting for you to notice them. Here are a few ways to bring them to the surface:

  1. Slow Down
Before you eat, pause. Take a deep breath. Let yourself be present with the food in front of you.

  2. Engage Your Senses
Notice the colors, textures, and flavors. Let the crunch of a fresh apple or the creamy richness of a favorite soup remind you how nourishing food can be.

  3. Create an Atmosphere You Love
Light a candle, use your favorite plate, or play soft music while you eat. Little things can make meals feel special.

  4. Celebrate Tiny Wins
Maybe you honored your hunger today. Or you stopped when you felt comfortably full. Or you just enjoyed a meal without guilt. Those are glimmers of progress.
